CVs are tricky to get right and it can take a lot of time and many iterations before you get it right. You need to ensure that when a job opportunity comes up you are ready to apply straight away with an up to date and eye catching CV. This article will list some key CV pitfalls and then run through the Dos and Don’ts for a great and effective CV.

Poor Use of language

Try not to use too  many cliches, slang and jargon.

Instead of saying I did this, say “I initiated a new process that saved the company X over a 12 month period”

Errors

Many CVs are rejected due to glaring errors ie spelling errors, before the recruiter/employer has fully read it. They typically have many CVs to read and will immediately reject any with errors as this can demonstrate a lack of professionalism.

Lack of relevant information

Please also make sure you get as much information as possible on the role and the employer  to ensure that your CV includes the skills and experience they require.Ensure these are listed on the first page. It is important that your CV is not too generic ie you have listed everything you have done which is relevant to the role.

Evidence

When listing key/core skills be sure to list examples of when they were utilised and how this impacted  the organisation. For example if you have highlighted marketing skills be sure to include reference to where and when they were specifically used.

Software issues

When you apply online for a role, your CV is scanned by software before human eyes ever see it.  Formatting options like columns, shading, boxes etc may look nice, but they could interfere with the software’s ability to store the information on your CV. So make your CV as plain as possible or if you are uploading a pdf file, make sure it is compatible with the software. Online recruiters will use key words to search for CVs containing particular skills and qualifications, so ensure that your CV includes the relevant key words likely to be used.

List of Dos and Don’ts

Dos

  • Evidence: Include examples of when you were able to utilise your  key skills and how they impacted the org
  • Two pages: A 2 page CV is ideal. Recruiters will typically not want to read anything longer as they have so many to read. Anything longer than 2 pages could be an indication that you have given to much detail.
  • Proofreading: Check and triple check your CV for errors. If possible get someone else to check for you
  • Research: Make sure you find out exactly what the employer is looking for. You should be ready with examples should you be called for interview.
  • Covering letter: Always provide a covering letter or email to go with your CV, as it’s another chance to convince the employer of your suitability.

Don’ts

  • Don’t Be negative: Avoid any criticisms of past or present employers, or mention any difficult periods in your career history. Your CV needs to be very positive.
  • Photo: Do not use a photo with your CV unless you are specifically asked to. It’s usually only relevant for work like modelling or promotions work.
  • Don’t Rely on one CV: Expect to have a number of CVs that you change depending on the job you are applying for. Always tailor your CV.
  • Don’t Use fancy layout: Avoid unusual fonts, columns, tables etc in your CV when writing it in a Word document. The formatting can cause issues for recruiters who will most likely move on to another CV.
